Astronaut Birthday Cake

So, I was asked to do an astronaut cake for Jamal's 5th birthday. The best part about this was that his mom knew exactly what she wanted. She had a picture of an exact cake she wanted me to replicate which made the design process super easy.

Jamal's mom was so excited about his cake that she asked me to take some pictures of the cake in process. You know what that means for you? More Pictures. Yeah!

I made this cake from a chocolate/vanilla swirl pound cake and filled it with my best chocolate buttercream. It's not often that I get to carve a cake and I wanted something that would hold up well and not fall apart when I cut into, so the pound cake worked out great!

This first pic is of the stacked cakes right after I carved the body of the rocket. I am always amazed at the amount of cake that I have to carve away and then throw out.

...add buttercream

...and fondant

...Voila! An almost finished rocket!

And what rocket doesn't need an astronaut...Molding people is quite a new thing for me but am pretty pround of how this little guys head turned out.

...Now for his space suit and helmet

And here it is...I wish the picture of the completed product was better so you could see all of the details. One of the things I loved was the hand painted silver stars all over the cake board and the moon that said 'Happy Birthday Jamal'.

So, Happy Birthday Jamal! I hope it was a blast!

Stephanie's Baby Shower Cupcakes

My friend Stephanie is having a baby!...and in celebration of baby Sawyer, we were invited to share a wonderful day with the expectant mother at her baby shower. And guess what?...I brought the cupcakes.

For this party I did three different flavors of mini-cupcakes. A lemon pound cake with blue vanilla buttercream, chocolate cake with fresh raspberry buttercream and vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream. I decorated each flavor with different fondant flowers and edible pearls.

We are so excited to meet little Sawyer at the end of the month. I know she'll be even sweeter than these cupcakes. Congrats Lance and Stephanie!

Mad Science Cake

I got a request last week for a mad science cake. Little did I know it would include a dissected frog! I have never dissected a frog myself, but I imagine making one out of sugar is much better than having to do the real thing. My favorite part about this cake were the bubbles. You can't tell in the picture but I put some luster dust on them so that they shimmered.

This was a chocolate cake with cookies and cream buttercream. It seems to be a trend!

Cody's Racing Cake

Cody, Slugger's brother, just turned 22. Cody loves slot car racing, so we made him this racing themed cake to take to a BBQ with all of his racing friends. The inside of the cake is chocolate with cookies and cream buttercream.

Minute to Win It Cake

I made this cake for a girl who loves the game show, Minute to Win It. It is not in the picture, but there was also an Oreo cookie on the top of the cake as another decorative piece. The cake was vanilla with banana cream filling and vanilla buttercream. Yum!

Princess Castle Cake

Now , we all know that I love a good party. My little man turns 5 in just over a month and the party planning is in full force around here. we really don't mess around. But, when I found out that there were so many kids in our area that were not fortunate enough to have a birthday party or even just a cake, it broke my heart.

I made this cake as donation to an organization that provides birthday parties for kids living local shelters. These kids would probably not have a birthday or party at all otherwise. It is a great way to help make some child's birthday
one to remember.

I made this cake for a little girl who was turning 4 and loves princesses. I made the top towers from fondant and gumpaste and the princess was my first real attempt at figure molding. I am super happy with how it turned out and hope that it provided a fabulous birthday for a little girl who I know really deserved one.

Royal Icing Cookies

I finally got to try decorating cookies with royal icing. The Cake Club that I belong to did this as the demonstration this month. It was a hands-on activity an I got to make a whole bunch of cookies. It was really fun and a lot easier than I thought it would be once I got the hang of it.
