Puppy Dog Birthday Cake

I made this cake for Ben's 7th birthday. This puppy has turned out to be one of my favorite cakes. My little Anna liked him so much that she asked me, "can we keep him?" and when I told her it was for someone else's birthday she let me know "but then I will miss him so much." That's how cute he was. The picture just doesn't do him justice.

Sugar Art Class

I've found a place in Kirkland called Dawn's Candy & Cake that offers classes in cake decorating and chocolate making. I've signed up for a couple of classes, but so far the sugar art class has been the most fun!
I learned so many tips, tricks and techniques for pulling, pouring and molding sugar. I got hands-on instruction and got to try out everything myself. I even got to experiment and make some sugar art pieces myself.
Here are a few of my favorite new creations.

Thing 1 & Thing 2 Cupcakes for Dr. Suess' Birthday

Dr. Suess is Slugger's favorite thing, so it seemed only right to make something special for all the kiddos in her class for Dr. Suess' birthday this week.
I came up with this Thing 1 & Thing 2 idea I thought was so super cute!
These are a basic vanilla cupcake baked in a red liner with a basic vanilla buttercream frosting. To make them super suessical, I added Thing 1 & Thing 2 stickers I made to the fronts of the liners and we gave the cupcakes a healthy dose of blue cotton candy hair. I think they turned out great!

However, after we finished packing them up for the following day, we watched a little tv. When we came back to them, the blue cotton candy had turned into a hard gooey mess on top. Not pretty. I guess the moisture from the buttercream had sucked all of the air out of the cotton candy and just left behind what it didn't want. Total bummer.

However, I hear the kids really liked their cupcakes. They are cupcakes after all and who doesn't like that!

Banana Chocolate Chip Cupcakes

I am not a fan of of almost anything banana. Banana flavored candy, smoothies with banana, or even bananas themselves make me cringe. However, I do like banana bread. I will always choose it over zucchini or pumpkin. I don't know why, but that's how it is.
This week's Banana Chocolate Chip Cupcakes were a hit! This cupcake was a banana cake filled with mini semi-sweet chocolate chips and topped with a chocolate buttercream and a banana chip. Not only did it look good, but it smelled and tasted delicious.
Some people were a little tentative about the banana flavor to start (as I would be) but even these people did not leave a crumb on the wrapper. And then, others were skeptical of my flavor combination all together...to them I say 'don't knock it till you try it.'
I think these were a total success! (Even the pic turned out great!)
